<lj:music>Nightrage</lj:music>

Lately I've been doing alot of thinking with regards to the state of youth today. And by youth, I mean more specifically those of my age group (18-25 for those who don't know). We seem so....directionless and to put it bluntly, stupid. I know I can't make a blanket statement with regards to the countless youths I have yet to encounter; in fact, I can't even speak for those outside of the suburban U.S., but it is these suburban youths (of which I am a member) that I touch upon with my discussion/rant/soliloquy today.

I think the first topic I touch on has to be the complete disinterest shown to anything remotely resembling importance. Though it is not a new phenomena, it certainly seemed intensify lately with the rise of a new credo of celebrity who're, in essence, famous for nothing. Exhibit A: Paris Hilton. The illustrious Ms. Hilton made her debut on the scene with the release of a shoddily filmed night vision sex tape that quickly made its rounds on the internet. Now, normally, this kind of thing would ruin someones career, or at least leave a black mark on it. However, Ms. Hilton has/had no career so to speak, so the tape escalated her popularity to A list celebrity levels. Now for those of you "not in the know", let me give you a little background on Paris Hilton. She is an heiress to the vast Hilton
fortune......and.....well....that's about it. She has lived her life in the complete lap of luxury, never having to work or do anything of meaning in her entire existence. She is/was notoriously shallow and stupid and has only done things in life that "she felt like." She had brief stints as a model as well as a slew of other trivial endeavors, but never anything of note.

Since the aforementioned sex tape, her popularity has exploded, and get this, all exposure of her has been POSITIVE!! She has used the tape as a way to bridge herself into other aspects of popular culture such as fashion design, the worst "music" project ever recorded, and of course fucking any famous person with a penis as a personal way to ensure she'll never leave the front of the tabloid filth that poisons the newsstands and supermarkets of this world. She's made appearances on a plethora of talk shows including Regis and Kelly and even had a TV show in which she, along with equally moronic counterpart Nicole Richie, demonstrated their utter and complete idiocy to the glee of the mostly ignorant public.

So by now you're probably thinking "Ok, this all sucks, but I thought the topic was the youth of this generation." Well, it is, and trust me, I'm getting to that, but the above was all an important segue. You see, instead of being reviled for her actions, Ms. Hilton is admired and even IDOLIZED by the youth of today. I'm 100% serious. I have spoken to my nine year old cousin as well as friends of my sister (16) and even just asked people randomly for a personal opinion of her; and not only is it good, it's almost a sense of reverence. I mean I understand how in American society today being a stupid spoiled whore could garner media attention. Especially if said whore is wealthy, but to be idolized? That is just ridiculous! This attitude towards Hilton and her ilk is even more prevalent amongst the college age girls I've encountered. The mere thought that people actually look up to this woman is revolting. It also speaks volumes about our generation. More people care about celebrity gossip than about anything that truly matters. Now I know I can't expect the youth of today to go out and become political debutantes, but their failure to even try to know or change anything is absolutely horrifying. Complacency should never set in this young, especially in the climate we live in. Now I'm not asking people to go out and rebel against things just for the hell of it, I'm saying there are a hell of alot of things out there that need to be changed and if not us, who? Here are some chilling statistics to think about. A new survey showed that one in five of American high school students believe that people should be prohibited from expressing unpopular opinions. Another study shows that only half of American high school students believe that newspapers should be allow to print unpopular opinions. If that doesn't scare you, I don't know what will. I personally hate fear mongering, but I believe in this case people need a fire lit under their asses. If we are really the future; then if nothing changes, the future is screwed. As will become my custom, I'll leave you with some lyrics to think about:

"Citizen!
You are truly faithful
To tradition
When you crucify
Those whose voices burn
Alas
A hundred years from now
You recite and corrupt
Their epitaphs
To crucify another."

Song: Citizen
Artist: Ihsahn
Album: The Adversary

P.S. So this entry ends on a tad bit lighter note, I just want to let you all know that Paris Hilton only has one god damned facial expression!!!! :-P
Here's proof!!!
http://parisfacial.ytmnd.com/

This is my introduction to you. Pretty concise, no? I'll elaborate later, but for now, please take awhile and soak up some meaningful lyrics for once. I can only imagine the drivel most of you must be exposed to on a daily basis :-P. So take this first entry as one of my many gifts to you. Though it is not a piece of my mind, it is still quite worthy of your time. Off to class for now, au revoir.
